Cénotaphe De Newton (1784)
Étienne-Louis Boullée was a visionary 18th-century architect whose designs often pushed the boundaries of the imaginable. His "Cénotaphe de Newton" of 1784 is a prime example of his bold and avant-garde approach to architecture. This monumental work, which was never built, was intended as a tribute to the great scientist Isaac Newton. Boullée designed a huge spherical structure that would symbolize both the infinity of the universe and the genius of Newton. The sphere, surrounded by cypress trees, was intended to be flooded with sunlight during the day and illuminated by an artificial starry sky at night, which would have created an almost mystical atmosphere.
Interesting fact: Boullée was not only an architect, but also a philosopher of architecture. He believed in the idea of "architecture of shadows," which uses light and darkness as central elements of design. His designs, although often unrealized, influenced generations of architects and inspired modern architecture. Another fascinating detail is that during the French Revolution, Boullée served as a teacher at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, where he passed on his revolutionary ideas to the next generation of engineers and architects. His works are a testament to his time and his unwavering vision of the power of architecture to transform the human experience.
