Nictea Nivea (Snowy Owl) The Birds Of Great Britain (1862–1873)
John Gould was an outstanding 19th-century British ornithologist and artist, known for his magnificent illustrations of birds. Between 1862 and 1873 he published "The Birds of Great Britain", a monumental collection of bird illustrations that is still considered a masterpiece of natural history. One of the most notable illustrations from this collection is that of the Snowy Owl, "Nictea Nivea". This depiction shows the majestic Snowy Owl in its natural splendour, with its snow-white plumage and piercing yellow eyes that seem to look directly at the viewer. Gould's ability to capture the essence and beauty of birds made his works an indispensable part of any ornithological collection.
Interesting fact: John Gould was not only a gifted artist, but also a shrewd businessman. He recognized early on the potential of the emerging market for natural history illustrations and used his skills to build a thriving business. A lesser-known detail of his life is that his wife, Elizabeth Gould, played a crucial role in the creation of many of his early works. She was a talented artist and helped complete numerous illustrations before tragically passing away at just 37 years of age. Her contribution to Gould's success is often overlooked, although without her support he may not have achieved the same fame.
